Guide
A practical way to judge whether a phone has enough space, and when cleaning up is cheaper than upgrading.
Open the storage screen in your phone’s Settings. It shows how much space is used, how much is free and what is using it. That number is a better guide than any rule of thumb, because it reflects how you really use your phone.
If you are using well under what the phone offers and the free space stays steady, you probably have enough. If free space shrinks every month, the question is what is growing.
Apps and the system itself stay fairly stable. Photos and videos are what grow, because every year adds more, and recording at a higher quality makes each one larger. Offline music, downloaded films and chat app media are the next common causes.
Our guide on why photos take so much space explains how resolution, video length and burst shots add up, so you can predict your own growth.
If your phone feels full, a clean-up is free and often releases a surprising amount. Removing duplicates, blurry shots, screenshots and a few large videos can free up gigabytes in an evening. The photo cleaner shows how much each group would save before you decide.
An honest check is worth doing before paying for a bigger phone or a larger cloud plan, because the clutter would simply move with you.
If you shoot a lot of video, keep your whole library on the phone, or often travel without good internet, a larger phone may be the right choice. Compare it with the ongoing cost of extra cloud space and decide what suits you. Check current prices from the manufacturer or provider, since they change.
Phones work best with some free space left. Leaving a margin means updates install smoothly and the camera never refuses to record at a key moment. If your free space drops below that buffer, treat it as a reminder to run a clean-up.
It is free, it runs in your browser, and nothing you choose is uploaded.
A very full phone can struggle to install updates, save new photos or run smoothly. Keeping some free space is a good habit.
It can reduce what you keep on the phone, but check how your service handles deleted items and whether it keeps a separate backup.
Use the storage screen in Settings. It lists apps by size and shows how much is photos, videos and other files.
