Guide
Moving to a new phone is the best moment to remove duplicates and empty cards, so you only carry across the contacts you want.
Contacts pile up for years across old phones, email accounts and apps. When you switch phones, all of them tend to follow you, including the duplicates, the cards with only a first name and the numbers that stopped working long ago. Moving is the natural moment to leave that clutter behind.
Export your contacts from the old phone or account as a VCF or CSV file and keep it somewhere safe. This is your untouched backup. The contacts page on this site includes step-by-step export instructions for both iPhone and Android, because the menus differ between devices.
If anything goes wrong later, that file lets you start again without losing anyone.
Open the contacts cleaner and choose your exported file. It is read inside your browser and not sent to our servers. The cleaner groups cards that share a phone number or email address, because those are strong signs of the same person. Cards that only share a name are flagged for you to check, not merged for you, since two different people can share a name.
It also lists cards with no name and cards with no phone number or email, which are usually leftovers worth removing.
Review each group, keep the ones you want merged, and download the cleaned file as a VCF or CSV. The merged card combines the phone numbers and emails from the originals, so you do not lose details by tidying. A CSV export keeps up to three of each per person, so choose VCF if someone has more.
Import the cleaned file into the account you will use on the new phone. If the old contacts are still syncing from another account, remove or hide them first so the duplicates do not return. Then check a handful of people you know to make sure everything arrived.
It is free, it runs in your browser, and nothing you choose is uploaded.
No. A website cannot reach the contacts on your phone. It works on the exported file and gives you a cleaned file to import yourself.
They are flagged for you to check and left unticked, because two different people can share a name. You choose whether to merge them.
No. The file is read in your browser. If you are signed in, only summary numbers such as how many cards were checked are saved, never names or numbers.
